“Eastern Blue stars has this positive impact on my life – fun with a group of friends, makes training enjoyable and makes me positive about everything else in my life”
(Player quote, Eastern Blue Stars Impact Report, October 2016)
Hello and welcome to Eastern Blue Stars, the only competitive women’s wheelchair basketball team in East Anglia, UK.
Eastern Blue Stars is always looking for new players, so if you live in East Anglia – Essex, Suffolk, Cambridgeshire, Norfolk, South Lincolnshire, West Hertfordshire – and have acquired an impairment or were born with a medical, physical condition, then we could be the team and sport you’ve been looking for.
You don’t need to be a full time wheelchair user but… you do need enthusiasm!
It’s fun, fast and competitive
People play wheelchair basketball with a wide range of impairments/ disabilities, some of them life-long, some of them acquired, but all here to stay, including:
- Leg amputations
- Spina bifida
- Cerebral palsy
- Spinal injuries
- Genetic physical conditions
- Cancer survivors
- Hip, knee and ankle problems (so cannot run/ play netball or running basketball anymore)
All current signed players live with impairments or have close relatives that deal with conditions every day, so we are used to what your body or condition can throw at you. We are more focused on what you can do, how we can make you a better player and hopefully give you more self-esteem and confidence off the court too.
We have moved training venues, some sessions are at Westley Middle School in Bury St Edmunds and some at Cambridge University sports centre in Cambridge, every three weeks. Training dates are sent to all players when they are confirmed, as well as invites to group events via our closed Facebook group. We are holding ‘Come and Try’ sessions for new players on Wednesday 28th August 18:00 to 21:00, at Cambridge University Sports Centre. In the future we hope to offer ‘Come and Try’ sessions in Ipswich and Cambridge, dates and venue to be confirmed.
We play in the British Wheelchair Basketball (BWB) Women’s league and compete in Division 3. Please see League Games page for our latest results.
Please read the rest of our website to find out more about us and how you can get involved with our club. We look forward to welcoming you to our team and hopefully giving you some new found happiness, fitness and friends.
We are part of the East Region Wheelchair Basketball Association (ERWBA), as we provide wheelchair basketball opportunities for women in this region. The ERWBA is affiliated to British Wheelchair Basketball (BWB), formerly known as Great British Wheelchair Basketball Association (GBWBA). This the national governing body and so we can operate under their charity number; 1144808.
